Alpha version of my Macbeth game

May not look good, but there's stuff going on in the back that you don't see. Couldn't get the stupid animations to work :(

My Game

Have had an idea for a simple yet addictive (hopefully) game that you can pick up and play for 5 - 10 minutes at a time. I put together a prototype in Game Maker. My aim would be to sell it for the iPhone, Android phones etc. Here's a little screenshot of the game. Obviously it'll look fancier when it's completely done.

Civiliztion V

Well so far i've put in a good 54 hours into this game. I really do like the game but I don't think it is as good as Civ IV. To me it seems a lot simpler then Civ IV and much easier to win. Like you can win the game by rush building 4 horsemen and plowing through every civilization. Granted it does get trickier as you go up in difficulty. I'm sure the horsemen will be nerfed a tad in a future update. So to make the game not as easy I try different stratagies other then the horseman rush. I also feel that diplomacy isn't that great in Civ V, haven't really used it because of that. Felt like there was more Diplomacy going on in previous Civs. Plus I've been winning to early and haven't got to the modern era at all and tried out the units from then. I think there may be too many buildings to build as well, definitly as the game progresses and if you don't really know what you are doing it could seem a bit daunting.

I do like that you can only have 1 unit per hex as you have to plan your attacks better instead of one stack of doom. It makes combat a little more straightforward as you can easily see what is attacking you. If the AI had a better understanding of stratagy that would be great :) Plus the AI units kind of run away when any damage is done to them. It seems far to easy to go to war with a civilization, defend and let them attack you. When there attacking units have all been destroyed just plow through them and do same with the next civilization till you win by domination. Also when you destroy all of a civilizaiotns units they wave a white flag and will give you most of there cities plus money and what not for peace. Crazy! Want to try and go for a cultural victory but domination victories keep getting in the way.

The game is still quite addictive and the whole one more turn is still there until it's 3 in the morning and you have to be up early in the morning. Just one more turn...

Closure - My game review

Closure is a 2d puzzle based platform game. The basis of the game is that you have dark and light. The character is restricted to light areas and as a result can only walk on these surfaces. There are 2 kinds of light sources; one produces light, the other produces light until you get close to it and then changes to darkness(which you can then fall through). You can carry these around with you to solve the puzzles. You can move through walls, floors and ceilings as well when they are dark. There are a number of places to put these light source and by playing the game you learn what they each do one does. Your objective is to make your way through a door in each level some of which have locks that need a key.

The game itself is a pretty simple idea but it makes for some interesting puzzles. The graphics are basic as there are only two colours white and black. It may be a straight forward idea but it it does the job and looks wonderful. The music and sounds add a nice ambiance which creates the ominous atmosphere. The music is a kind of chilling heart beat with a heavy wind and works perfectly for this game.

You are introduced quite slowly into the game. The controls are intuitive enough using just the arrow keys. The first few levels serve as an introduction and also is the title sequence to the game. You start off not really knowing what you are doing with just a few written clues on the walls. The puzzles begin slowly and suddenly you are in the thick of some mind-bending puzzles. These become more complex as the game progresses but the game still maintains a bit of variety as it seemed a few easy ones were thrown in for good measure. There is no real dying in Closure so to speak of. You can fall into darkness but you just start back at the start of the level. Also you can just restart at anytime if you get stuck anywhere.

The game is quite entertaining. I like the dark feel to the game. I would say an average gamer would complete the game over the course of a couple hours. Once you have solved the puzzles and completed it there would not be much interest in playing again. It starts to feel a bit repetitive the 2nd time through but for a free game it is most certainly worth it. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who likes puzzles and a bit of a challenge.

Boardgame - Mark your territory thoughts

Played my board game "mark your territory" with Owen and Veronica today. I found that there was not enough interaction with the other players in terms of taking over someone Else's territory. Even when it there eventually was, it was not enough and was only towards the end of the game. So it seemed by the time we got to each other the game was over. The game needs quicker conflict. I think also there is no way to gain the upper hand. The end result is to even. I also found that keeping tabs on the number of turns that have been taken doesn't work to well. Also I think using 2 moves to mark a territory may be confusing sometimes and then the 1 move point on top of that to take over someone else's territory can be more confusing.

Need more conflict!

So i think to take maybe either 4 to 8 territories out to make territory more precious and thus encourage taking of each others territory. Maybe the first to use all their territory markers win the game instead of keeping track of what move it is. Also an idea would be if a player owns a territory block you gain an extra move point, which would encourage players to take over each others territory. Maybe to get the game going quicker players start with the first 3 territories at the starting location already marked. Which also adds another move point for them (unless an aggressive players wants to mess that up :) ) Maybe add some diagonal movement too.

I also enjoyed the other two games by Owen and Veronica were good. I can see there's definitely scope for improvement in all 3 games and new concepts/design elements.

My life as a game ideas

Thinking of what aspects of my life that could be a game.
1 I cycle a lot so a cycling game - I'm thinking along the lines of having to cycle through a city with traffic/pedestrians and all around. Can be in either a race, time limit, beat your own time or free mode(where you can just cycle around). Basically a racing game with bikes. There would be obstacles such as glass on the roads(potentially burst your tires), red lights (so you could go through them but there would be vehicles coming at you, pedestrians wondering on to the road without looking if a bike is coming. Would need a simulated traffic system and pedestrians.

2 I work in a shop- wouldn't be an end to this game so it would be an open ended game. I'm thinking along the lines of Transport/railroad tycoon, theme park except it'd be in a shop. What kind of shop you have would be up to you e.g. big supermarket, small newsagent, games shop or whatever. So you would have to order supplies from suppliers, hire and fire staff, price items, deal with robberies.

3 I play guitar most days - so some kind of guitar hero game with a difference of course. What that is I don't know as of yet. Will think about it.

4 I like cats, I have a cat so some kind of game where you're a cat :) Haven't thought what it'd play like. I have an idea now. You have to find stray cats and get them to like you by feeding them, playing with them

5 I like football so maybe a football game. Either one where you play as the players (top down game like Sensible world of soccer) or a management game (like football manager).

6 A beer brewing game, just started brewing my own beer at home. So you would have to brew different beers and sell the on or something. Depending on how good they are they would sell better. Thus making more money you could spend to buy better ingredients and better equipment.
So you brew your beer by adding ingredients and going through the procedures. But you have to do them at the right time and add the correct amount of ingredients. So if you don't do it right it'll turn out bad and if you do it right it'll be good and various levels in between. Buying better equipment and ingredients will result in better beer too. Eventually you can accumulate enough resources/money to open your own brewery and you can automate the process for a beer you have already created. Of course you'll be selling your beer to pubs, people, hotels, and well basically anywhere that wants to buy beer. Sell by the bottle, can and keg. But that's not the main part of the game. The selling would be simple and not very involved.

Ludology

Had my first ludology class, was quite fun. Enjoyed making the boardgame. Turned out well enough I thought. After playing it I see where I went wrong in the design. How I imagined it to play out was quite different than it actually did. I see where I would go with it from here though. I also enjoyed seeing what other people came up with.

It involved 2 players trying to get to the other side of the board and when they occupy the same square they fight using a throw of the dice.

Gonna play some Civilization 5 now :)

First Blog Post

Just testing it out :)
